Robson Valley Mushroom Festival
2025 Presenters
“There is so Mushroom for Learning”
Our festival presenters are a diverse and knowledgeable group of experts in the field of
mycology whose goal is to increase public knowledge of the variety of mushrooms and fungi
that grow in the Robson Valley. Through their presentations, workshops, and forays, they hope
to inspire you to learn more about the fascinating field of mycology and to broaden your
experience and knowledge of what is growing "in your own back yard”.
Martin Osis
Martin is a mycology educator from Alberta, Canada who has been passionate about mushrooms for over 30 years. Martin teaches and consults on field identification of wild mushrooms, forest ecology, medicinal and toxicological topics, and more. He has previously served in a variety of roles, including as a founding member and President of the Alberta Mycological Society, Vice President and Canadian Trustee of the North American Mycological Association, member of the Pacific Northwest Key council. He is regarded as one of Alberta's wild mushroom identification experts. Go check out his website! Martin's Mushrooms or youtube martinonmushrooms.

Tyson Ehlers
Tyson is a professional biologist and a forest ecologist from the Slocan Valley who has been fascinated by fungi most of his life. He has worked or over 20 years on numerous mycological inventory and research projects throughout BC. His work on economically important wild-harvested mushrooms such as chanterelles and pine mushrooms has contributed to a better understanding of their ecology and recognition in forest management planning. Tyson has taught wild mushroom identification courses and guided at mushroom-themed events across BC for many years. He is a member of the Pacific Northwest Key Council, which bring amateurs and professional mycologists together to further mycological knowledge. Tyson is an avid mushroom hunter and spends much of his time in the forest collecting mushrooms, both for the kitchen and for the microscope. Tyson has authored several mycological publications, including a guidebook to mushrooms in the Kootenays.

Stephen
St Laurent
Steph is an avid recreational student of the science and practices of mycology and has been studying in earnest for the past 15 years. When he’s not at mushroom festivals, reading about fungi, foraging, or talking about every aspect of mushrooms to whoever will listen, he’s out hunting, fishing, gathering berries or taking photos of it all in the forests in and around Prince George. He can be found posting his finds and recipes at Adventures in Self Sufficiency.

Mitch Milgram
Mitch is a naturalist joining us from his home in Salmon Arm, where he pursues his interests in
botany generally and mycology specifically. Over the last 45 years Mitch has been a member of a number of mushroom clubs, and is still active with the South Vancouver Island Mycological Society, the Alberta Mycological Society, and the Pacific North West Key Council. For the past 25 years he has taught general interest mushroom identification courses with Okanagan College in Salmon Arm, Vernon, and occasionally in Revelstoke. When not out hiking in the woods Mitch will often be found in his stained-glass studio.

Leanne Reitan
Leanne is an ecologist from Castlegar in the West Kootenay. After many years immersed in the world of plants, she was drawn to the “dark side” of fungi around 2018 and now spends all the time she can in the habitats shared by both. Initially drawn in by photographing the beauty in fungal diversity, Leanne’s interests spread to mushroom ID and now the finds that excite her most tend to be the ones to which she can’t immediately put a name. There is so much still to be learned about and from mushrooms, and Leanne’s background in education means that she is happy to share what she knows, but also eager to explore that which she doesn’t. Leanne’s latest interest is mushroom genomics, in which DNA is used to determine mushroom identity and interrelations. Leanne is active on iNaturalist, under the username leannestacy.

Larry Evans
Larry is a mushroom guru from south of the border in Montana. Larry is featured in the film Know Your Mushrooms by Ron Mann and referred to as the Indiana Jones of Mushrooms.
He has been teaching classes & leading mushroom expeditions since 1980.
Larry attends mushroom festivals throughout the NW states and Canada and is happy to be on the program after a festival hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to issues with crossing the border during the pandemic. When he is not attending festivals he is foraging and travelling in Central and South America including a stint in Ecuador with the BBC and PBS Networks filming on witch doctors and wild mushrooms.

Much of her teaching focuses on forging a relationship with -and an understanding of- our wild places and the many interactions ongoing within it. Honouring the importance of observing the natural cycles of plants, mushrooms and animals throughout the seasons, she aims to encourage an appreciation for all that surrounds us.
Erik Hrabovsky
Erik Hrabovsky deeply bowed to the wisdom of the mycological queendom back in 2016 when his Free the Fungi Mushroom Co concept was conceived. Forming such a partnership with mycelium seemed only natural after witnessing them restore habitats, combat drought, clean water, cycle nutrients, build soil, remove pollutants, and introduce symbiotic relations for other life.
Erik brings to all things a diverse background, his experience as a father, biologist, natural builder, native plant enthusiast, teacher and more, to passionately cultivate (re-)integrations between people and fungi.
